Will you save for “the fastest cycling shoes in the world”? Plus more tech news from Pinarello, Rapha, POC, Selle Italia, Gore, Stolen Goat and more

It’s been a very busy week in the bike tech world with new products dropping like premieres, and we have new stuff from top brands like Rapha, Gore, Selle Italia and MAAP. We start, however, with news of which LoreOne shoes are said to be the fastest in the world. They are certainly among the most expensive too.

The “world’s fastest cycling shoes” go into production

The LoreOne, billed as the “world’s fastest cycling shoes”, goes into production after two and a half years in development, but you’ll have to dig deep if you want a pair.

You might recall that we first told you about the radical looking LoreOne shoe last year.

Lore says he’s the first to develop scan-to-print shoe technology that allows him to cater to all foot shapes and sizes. It 3D prints” with continuous carbon fiber to produce a light and stiff monocoque frame [comprising] complex organic shapes without the use of a mold.

The LoreOne also has a “back brace”. The idea is that it “aligns the foot from above, eliminating the need for supportive insoles or orthotics.”

Lore claims his shoe minimizes dead spots at the top and bottom of your pedal stroke to increase your overall power.

“With traditional cycling shoe designs, the soft upper drains energy onto the dorsum (top) of the foot,” he says. “LoreOne’s patent-pending custom CarbonAirFrame is designed to capture dorsal rotational energy to activate power flow in dead zones.”

Lore also says its manufacturing process improves durability based on the end product using precisely the materials needed and nothing more. The shoes are printed in California and would use carbon neutral shipping to your door.

The price? Ah! Well, that might be the sticking point. You’re looking at $1,969 – that’s about £1,750…so, yeah, there’s that. If you have anything left after paying your heating bill, they are available from next month.

Filippo Ganna Hour Record: The Movie

You will know that Filippo Ganna set a spectacular new UCI hour record a fortnight ago which is unlikely to be broken for an age (unless Ganna himself decides to have another crack), and Pinarello has put together a video giving a behind-the-scenes look at the development of its Bolide F HR 3D (mostly), athlete preparation (a little), and the race itself (not much).

This is worth 9:18 minutes of your time.

If you want your very own Bolide F HR 3D built with the same components as Ganna’s, you’re looking at around €75,000 (£65,800). You can mount it in your LoreOne shoes.

Great Britain cycling team opens new £1 wind tunnel at Halfords

The Great Britain cycling team has officially opened the state-of-the-art new wind tunnel it bought from Halfords for just £1. It’s a lot cheaper than Ganna’s bike or those LoreOne shoes, although the bad news is that you can’t go to your local store and buy yourself a blower for a quid.

2023 Manchester Wind Tunnel - 1

The tunnel, initially based at the Halfords-backed Boardman Performance Center in Worcestershire, uses a finely tuned data capture system that sends video footage and information back to the rider in real time. Aerodynamicists can continuously adjust wind speed and direction to mimic the conditions of any event or environment.

When the Boardman Performance Center closed, Halfords sold the tunnel fan and control units to British Cycling for a token payment of £1. With support from UK Sport and Manchester City Council, the tunnel has been rebuilt and upgraded to help runners on their way to the Paris 2024 and LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The facility is based at the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance on the Etihad Campus in East Manchester, next to the National Cycling Centre, and opens as Great Britain Cycling Team track riders return to Manchester after having spent the majority of 2022 training at Derby.

As well as discovering new performance gains for the next Olympic and Paralympic Games, British Cycling is already investigating how research teams will benefit from access to the tunnel through cycling education programmes, equipment development and events.

The facility was officially opened this week with attendees including Chris Boardman, three-time Olympic gold medalist Ed Clancy and Halfords’ Paul Tomlinson.
