U.S. National Cycling Championships arrive in Detroit

DETROIT, MI – For the first time since 1978, Detroit will be the host city of a national cycling championship. The USA Cycling US Madison National Track Championships will be held November 12-14, 2021 at the Lexus Velodrome, which is owned and operated by the Detroit Fitness Foundation.

America’s best racers and Detroit’s best will compete on the one-of-a-kind bike path. Championship races will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 12 and Saturday, November 13, and at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 14.

The Madison Championships feature teams of 2 riders competing against each other in a style of racing similar to a relay race, but very different. Using hand-sling exchanges, teammates enter and exit the race over the entire distance of the race.

Madison racers have a unique combination of skill, speed, strength, and bike savvy to negotiate the tight spaces of the track and the shoulder-to-shoulder intensity of pack racing.

Bikes do not have brakes, speeds reach up to 40 MPH. The style was developed in Madison Square Gardens in the early 1900s and is known around the world as “The American”.

Detroit bike racing fans will be able to watch the action unfold for the very affordable price of $ 15 and $ 20. Tickets available at this link. At home, viewers can watch the races live on
Facebook, Flobikes.tv, Instagram, etc.

Owned by the Michigan nonprofit Detroit Fitness Foundation, the Lexus Velodrome features the bike path, but also includes a walking, running and skating oval, a group fitness studio, and a workout area with free weights. .

Its infield cafe – the SpokeEasy Lounge, serves drinks of all kinds and is open for all racing events. Meade Lexus of Lakeside, Meade Lexus of Southfield and Lexus of Ann Arbor are the site’s primary sponsors. Diversified Members Credit Union and the RAPHA Foundation are also supporters.
