Trail Angels, South Africa’s largest women-only mountain bike club

Trail Angels, a local cycling group, have been roaming the streets and trails of Cape Town for ten years. They provide an incredible opportunity for women of all fitness levels to take on the mother city on two wheels – good for you and good for the environment.

The group started with just six women, meeting once a week in 2012, and has since grown into the largest women-only mountain bike club in South Africa.

It was founded by Nikki Haywood, who is backed by veteran Trail Angel and head coach, Lisa Goode. Together, these powers “get things done.”

Do this in different ways:

Trail Angels operates primarily from the southern suburbs. But, as Nikki agrees, Capetonians are spoiled for choice when it comes to cycle paths. So this gang of adventurers goes out and explores beyond the suburbs too.

“The most impressive thing about our club is that we encourage women to get out there and try extreme sport in a nurturing, kind and loving environment.”

So even if you’ve never tackled a trail before, there’s no reason you can’t give it a go. The Trail Angels will be watching over you, after all.

There really is room for everyone, with five different groups to suit your fitness level and ability. Progress from fundamentals to beginners to intermediates. As Lisa said, “there is no such thing as the advanced because we are always learning”.

Ultimately, you have the chance to find what works for you. Some ladies are there for the thrill of a gnarly descent, and others for the coffee. It is however consistent that everyone is welcomed with open arms.

There are currently around 200 women in the club, so you’re bound to meet some new best friends. And don’t worry, you don’t have to ride every day to catch up on the latest news. There is a weekly schedule with different goals that runs at least three times a week. Pick and choose your poison.

To participate, members pay a monthly fee and can participate in as many sessions as they wish per week. There are also day trips and epic tours for members and non-members. From the vineyards to the Cederberg, these are the ultimate girls’ trips – with plenty of adventure.
