Police issue warning over increased use of ‘troublesome’ e-bikes in Chesterfield
Officers have reported an increase in the number of electric bikes being used in the area – and they have advised homeowners on the laws they should follow.
On Thursday morning, a spokesperson for the Chesterfield Town Center Safe Neighborhood Team said officers from the Derbyshire Police Firearms Unit had located an ‘troublesome’ electric bicycle.
“The rider was reported to have no insurance and the bike was seized,” they added.
âWe are seeing an increase in the number of electric bikes being used in and around the city.
“But are the riders of these aware of their permissions and their requirements when riding?”
âAn electric scooter falls under the legal definition of a motor vehicle and is therefore subject to road tax, insurance, registration and driving license.
âAll offenses committed by the driver of an electric scooter are covered by the Road Traffic Act 1988. An electric scooter is classified as a ‘motorized transporter’.
âIt is illegal for private electric scooters to be used on roads, cycle paths, tracks and sidewalks.
âPrivate electric scooters can only be used on private land where there is no public access and with the relevant permission of the landowner.
âWe will continue to enforce these vehicles, which unfortunately cause nuisance on our roads and downtown streets. “
