CycleGuard Research reveals 80% of UK cyclists ride without insurance
CycleGuard research reveals more than 12 meters of bikes should be on the roads with many first-time cyclists
LONDON, July 21, 2021– (COMMERCIAL THREAD) – Britain will experience a cycling boom this summer, as millions of families turn to vacations for their summer vacations. That’s according to a study released today by CycleGuard, which is part of Thistle Insurance.
The research, conducted by Opinium last week, found that two-fifths of Britons (39%) plan a summer vacation this year, with the figure reaching almost half of 18-34 year olds (47%). Of those planning a trip, almost half (44%) said that they or a member of their group will take or rent a bicycle during the trip, including their partners (28%) or children (15% ). With that in mind, 12.4 million bikes are expected to be used on trips across the UK this summer, with these using an average of two bikes per trip.
“This will be the summer cycling vacation,” said Alex Bennett, director of Thistle Insurance, “With the weather finally turning, schools on the verge of separation and families desperate to take a break, it doesn’t. no doubt we will see a lot more bikes around and for all the fun and fitness this will unfortunately lead to an increase in damage, accidents and theft. “
For many, it will be the first time they use a bicycle during their stay. According to research, 23% of those who plan to cycle on their own have never done so during their stay. This figure rises to 31% of children cycling for the first time and even more for first partners (35%).
Despite this clear increase in bicycles on the road, holidaymakers will not take out additional or specialized insurance. Research found that almost half (49%) of those staying there would not purchase insurance. This figure rises to almost two-thirds of those 55 and over (64%). According to the data, 25% of people who plan to cycle will depend on health insurance, with less than a fifth (18%) having purchased bicycle insurance.
Bennett concluded: “Given that we’re going to see a lot more cyclists on the road – many of whom are children and first-time cyclists, the lack of proper insurance is worrying. Many policies may not cover injuries, accidents, or theft of a bicycle. something we urge vacationers to reconsider to avoid a potential costly and unwanted surprise at the end of their trip. “
The Lake District is expected to host the most number of cycle tourists, with 15% of holidaymakers going there. Next come Wales and Cornwall (14%).
