Community Health Options Open For Expanded Enrollment – Mount Desert Islander
BAR PORT – Lewiston-based Community Health Options ready to respond to President Biden’s executive order to reopen federal insurance markets from the Affordable Care Act from February. 15 until May 15.
“This reopening is an important decision that will triple the access time for people to purchase health insurance in 2021, which is more vital than ever, given the country’s historically high unemployment rate and the scale of healthcare needs brought on by COVID-19. Said Kevin Lewis, President and CEO of Health Options.
Health Options was incorporated in 2011 in response to an Affordable Care Act (ACA) loan program that encouraged nonprofit insurance co-ops to form and compete with legacy insurance companies. The move increased consumer choice, especially in underserved communities in rural areas like Maine, and helped increase access to affordable, high-quality health insurance benefits. Health Options has been in the market since its inception and has been the only carrier in the state to participate in it each year.
According toKaiser Family Foundation, Maine has 63,500 uninsured people who are eligible for the market, and 45% (29,000) are eligible to receive partial subsidies, which puts health insurance within the reach of many who do not have it. .
